Absztrakt (kivonat)
It is quite evident also in geographical point of view the close and inevitable relationship between Banglades and India as the latter virtually surrounds the former one. Nevertheless the relationship between them hasn’t been harmonious during the last 40 years at all. It makes the situation even more complex the fact that the other great power’s – China’s – in& uence permanently growing in the region which makes the Indian leadership more and more concerned about it. % is is naturally Indian sphere of interest, and China has already made its presence in the region of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean quite evident with the so-called “string of pearls” – the Chinese military base system – in Pakistan, Banglades, and Srí Lanka. Besides China made quite de" nite that they won’t recognize the MacMahon-line and won’t recognize the Indian supremacy in Arunchal Prades state either. In 1962 they have already fought a controversial war in that area. % erefore the geopolitical role of Banglades has been appreciated and the political leadership of the country tries to capitalize it creating a virtual bridge between the two political giants and use their support to relief the economical troubles in the country. % e particular attention towards Banglades’ strategic position is due to the country’s signi" cant stock of natural gas as well, which potential exploitation is a lucrative possibility for both energy hungry rivals – China and India. Banglades has to create such a “Modus Vivendi” that the political leadership of the country can assert their claims for such sensitive issues like the water sharing in the more than 50 common rivers and the transit problems towards the northern countries like Nepal or Bhutan. Meanwhile they badly need the " nancial and economical support of both of the big potential donor countries. % e infrastructure and the economic structure is backward, more than 50% of the population is illiterate, which further perpetuates the poverty and gives little hope for rising out of the misery. % e country is extremely short of investments and capital so it needs the support of India and China as these rising economic powers are getting more active in the investment market. % e possibility for the a more prosperous future of Banglades is rely on the political will of the two most populous countries of the world and their rivalry will de" nitely in& uence the fate of that economically and ecologically alike fragile region.
