This study makes an attempt to outline the historic and ethnic evolution of the Maldive people presenting the linguistic and religious stratiB cation of its cultural complex from the hardly perceivable Dravidian and more obvious Indo-Aryan as well as Buddhist heritage until the dominant Islamic overlayer and acquainting the characteristic political occurences of its history from the colonial conquest to the B rst democratic elections have been held recently and B nally gives a brief summary about Dhivehi, the language used by the islanders and Islam, the religion followed by the Maldivians.
