In 2001, I wrote a paper about the Várkony toponyms of the Carpathian Basin in 2001. This topic has drawn my attention because it is a common place in the academic literature that the Várkony toponyms are the only or the most certain toponymic traces of the Avar Khaganate. However, in that paper I pointed out that there were several problems with this opinion: 1. There is a six-hundred-year gap between the last mention of the Varchonites (that is the other name of the Avars, or one of the groups of the Avars in the Greek sources) and the first mention of the Várkony toponyms. 2. We know very little about the relation of these two words (Varchonites – Várkony), and we actually know nothing about the peoples who took part in the process of word lending. We cannot verify that the Várkony was not a stem from a personal name as well. 3. There are some historical and topographical problems with the situation of the Várkony toponyms too. Therefore, in that article I have carefully queried the relationship of these two words. As far back as 2001, I knew that the solution to the question of the Várkony toponyms was not able to solve all the problems of the toponyms from the Avar Period in the Carpathian Basin. I knew that we have to examine all the toponyms possibly related to the Avars or the age of the Avar Khaganate in the academic literature. That is why in the present paper I make an attempt to collect all the problems regarding the probable toponymic material of the Avar Age. First of all, I set up two main categories of the examined toponyms: 1. The first one contains the toponyms and hydronyms of the contemporary Greek and Latin sources considering the area of the Avar Khaganate between 567 and the 9th century AD. 2. The second one optionally contains all the possible toponyms and hydronyms of the later Latin sources regarding Hungary from the age of the Árpád Dynasty and the Middle Ages. Afterward I collected all the potential data of the written sources and all the observations of the scholars who dealt with this difficult question. All in all, I have made the following assumptions: 1. Apart from one or two ambiguous examples (e.g. Teremhegy), we are not able to find a toponym of the contemporary sources which could survive after the fall of the Avar Khaganate. At the end of the 9th century, the conquest of the Carpathian Basin by the early Hungarians made almost a tabula rasa in the world of the toponyms (except for the Antique names of the big rivers, etc.). 2. The sporadic words of Avar origin (names of peoples or tribes, personal names and names of the office-holders) from the Greek and Latin sources do not appear among the toponyms of the Hungarian Kingdom in the Middle Ages. 3. We know almost nothing about the language/languages of the Avar Khaganate despite of all the attempts to find toponyms of Avar origin out of the many thousand toponyms of unidentified origin of the Carpathian Basin. These attempts ended with a failure. Even so, all these assumptions will not be able to affect the question of the survival of the Avars in the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century AD, and the possibility of connection between late Avars and early Hungarians as well.
