After raising theoretical and historical questions on the principles of division of sins, the author discusses the relationship between Dante’s poem and the classical and medieval concepts that inspired the Comedy. He investigates in this framework the opposition between peccatum and vitium which is the main difference between the worlds of the Inferno and the Purgatorio.
