Abstract
Two basic problems can be identified when studying the 9th century settlement history of the Upper Tisza Region. The first one - the dating difficulties of pottery findings - is typical for the period, while the second one is specific for the region in question: this is the determination of medieval ethnic conditions of the territory. In my study I examine these two groups of problems mainly from the aspect of settlement history. My investigation was motivated by the lack of grave pottery (and generally that of burials) from the 9th century and by the need for ethnic determinations of the settlements examined in the region which I noticed in special literature. In the first part of the study, I shortly introduce three settlement parts from the Nyírség that - according to the traditional belief - are probably dated to the 9th century: sites Nyiregyháza-Rozsrétszőlő-Szelkó-dűlő (МЗ-148/b.), Nyirtass-Csárda-lapostól ÉNy-ra and KisvárdaKiskert-dűlö. By analysing these settlement parts, I have come to the conclusion that although the pottery material of all the three sites corresponds to our present knowledge of 9th-century settlement ceramics, the differences between them are so remarkable that it would be impossible to create a unified typochronological system. According to my experience, we cannot reliably determine the special features characteristic in a certain period for one given region. In the second part of my work I focus on the question of the ethnic composition of the settlements in the Upper Tisza Region. My goal was to make a catalogue of published settlements of the region, at least partly dated to the Late Avar Age in the 9th century. I found only twelve sites, ten of which were described by the researchers as Slavic or probably Slavic. However, we find a number of sweeping statements among their arguments: they connect Slavs mostly with such simple and prevalent archaeological phenomena that were widely applied in the whole of Central and Eastern Europe in the Early Middle Ages. So these "special features" cannot be used for distinguishing ethnic groups. In the light of recent researches, we can observe a growing number of Late Avar sites in the region both on the interior and exterior side of the Csörsz Dyke. This calls for a new synthesis: early medieval settlement history seems to be undergoing changes.
