The city of Bács was a well-known city in the kingdom of Hungary through the centuries. The golden age of the city were in the middle ages. The history of this town is remarkable not just because it was the seat of the archbishops of Kalocsa from the end of the 11th Century, but also because many rulers came to this city. In 1158 King Géza II (1141—1162) celebrated the Easter holidays in Bács. The byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143—1180) conquered the city in 1164 when he marched against Hungary. However, the dwelling of King Andrew III (1290-1301) and queen Mary of house Anjou (1382-1385, 1386-1395) is very questionable. The husband of Mary of Anjou, Sigismund of Luxemburg (1387—1437) was many times in the city of Bács. Moreover, he organised a meeting in the casde of Bács with Stefan Lazarevic (1389—427) who was the despot of Serbia. The presence of King Albert of Habsburg (1437-1439) during 1438 is also unclear. King Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490) travelled to Bács in 1463, 1464,1475 and 1476. He organised his military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire from the city. During the reign of the Jagiellonian dynasty (1490—1526) the city became a well- known town in central Europe. King Wladislaw II (1490-1516) visited the city and archbishop Peter Váradi many times. King Wladislaw organised the national parliament in Bács in 1500, when an alliance was made between Venice and the kingdom of Hungary against the Ottomans. During the reign of King Ludwig II (1516-1526) another parliament was held in the city in 1518. After the batde of Mohács, the ottoman emperor Suleiman took and burned the city in September 1526 ending the glorious history of the city of Bács.
