This paper aims to present a comparative analysis of caricatures published in Hungarian comic papers (Az Üstökös, Borsszem Jankó, Bolond Miska, Ludas Matyi) in the first years after the Austro–Hungarian compromise. The author intends to demonstrate the ways of the depiction of a national hero, Lajos Kossuth. The comic papers can be connected to political parties evaluating the rule of Kossuth differently, therefore Kossuth’s representation depended on the political attitude of the comic paper. The results of the examination reveal the themes which were connected with Kossuth (independence vs. compromise, public opinion and Kossuth, Kossuth as God, Kossuth and the Hungarian left whinged politicians, the emigrant Kossuth) and some elements of the mythicized Kossuth figure (e.g. „Kossuth hat”).
