Abstract
The Roman Catholic curates in the 19th century were usually inexperienced, but keen and ambitious young priests, open to new proposals such as new confraternities. The welcome of their new ideas depended on the purposes and character of the parish priest. When a curate was allowed to organize and lead a religious association, it was a pure sign of the parish priest’s trust. These confraternities usually survived the disposition of the founder, so we can look at these organizations as the most durable “memorials” of the curates. The leading role offered great opportunities to build personal ties between curates and believers. Only the pastoral work around rites of passages and the regular visits to the filias ensured similar kind of immediacy. The parish priest was usually too busy to take care of the filias, so the regular pastoration was typically the curate’s work. In my essay I attempt to analyze the possible effects of curates on the spirituality of believers in Csongrád at the end of the 19th century, mainly through the confraternities and the work in the filias.
