Abstract

The new borders drawn after the First World War fundamentally changed the social and cultural environment in which the earlier Jewish strategies had emerged and functioned; they shaped their attitude towards Hungarian symbolic politics. The group strategies of the denominations and movements represented in the Hungarian-language Jewish press in Hungary interpreted Hungarian symbolic politics after the Trianon peace dictate in different ways and incorpo-rated these interpretations in their discourses. Neolog Jewry identified with the national pain caused by the Trianon peace treaty. The paper published many arti-cles about Jews beyond the border who had been punished by the new authori-ties for their support for Hungarian identity. An important point at issue between the Zionist and the Neolog strategy was the question of the Jewish communi-ties beyond the borders. In these territories the Zionists set up Jewish national organisations. Later, after the change of rule, this aspiration found support in the governments of the successor states. The aim of the leadership of the successor states was to reduce the numerical proportion of Hungarians in the annexed ter-ritories by separating the Jewish masses classified among the Hungarians. With the loss of the historical Hungarian territories Orthodoxy also lost important reli-gious communities. They linked the settlement of the two losses, and linked both to the moral improvement of Hungary and the deepening of its religiosity. The modification of the borders created an entirely new situation for all three Jewish strategies.
