After the first World War the peace-system of Versailles largely reshaped the geopolitical map of Europe and the whole world. Empires disappeared, new succession states and alliance systems came into existence. The new world-system developed on the basis of the unjust peace-system that did not consider the right of national self-determination, resulted in instability and included the danger and reality of a new world war to be broken out. These changes and their consequences - having an effect up to now- exercised the influence on the history of Central and Eastern Europe as well. These changes contributed to the development of different branches of social sciences during the period between 1919 and 1939. The theory of international relations and its two tendencies were elaborated then. The Fourteen Points of Woodrow Wilson published on 8 January, 1918 became the basis of the so-called idealistic- institutional paradigm, while the study „The Twenty Years Crisis. An Introduction to the Study of International Relations 1919- 1939” written by Edward Hallett Carr established the so-called realistic paradigm. During this period several geopolitical schools - British, German, Italian ones – hallmarked by Sir John Halford Mackinder, Karl Ernst Haushofer and Giulio Douhet – came into being. The representatives of these geopolitical schools analyzed the special position of Central and Eastern Europe from the viewpoint of the new borders and the features of the new international system, they also elaborated theory of pan-regions and the concept of Heartland.
