The Ostend Company (or Austrian East India Company) was a special chartered trading company, which founded in the Austrian Netherlands (part of the Holy Roman Empire (Habsburg Empire), currently Belgium). The company was established in 1722. The headquarters of the company was in Antwerpen. The commercial depots and the auction places were in Oostende and Brügge. The Ostend Company main task was trade with – mostly – the East Indies, India, Bengal, China, Mocha and several other Regions (Japan, Formosa (Taiwan), etc.). One of its features, no Austrians were involved or employe in the Company. The benefits enriched mostly the Flemish merchants. The official languages – in Austrian Netherlands as well – were Flemish and French, but in a practice mostly Flemish. The Austrian East India Company dealt mostly spices, tea, coffee, porcelain and a lot of valuable Eastern goods. The company was in competition with mostly the Dutch and British East India Companies. Under international pressure from Great Britain and the Dutch Republic (United Provinces of the Netherlands), the King of Hungary, King of Bohemia and the Emperor of Holy Roman Empire, Charles III (VI) dissolved the company in 1731. This study presents the history of a short-lived trading company.
