Absztrakt (kivonat)
In this article, the author basically draws attention to a common denomination problem in Hungarian archaeological research. The Hungarian ethnographic collections contain a large number of andirons, usually made of wrought iron. These objects ensure proper burning of logs in open fireplaces. Archaeological research also uses the term andiron for many special clay objects found in prehistoric (mostly in Bronze and Iron age) sites. Although they are somewhat similar in shape to “real” andirons, their other characteristics (thin villages, ornamentation etc.) could certainly perform a function different from that of ethnographic andirons. Thus, the use of this name for these objects is considered by the author of the article as unfounded. In addition, in the case of a third group of objects, the term appears frequently in the achaeological literature as well. This third group of objects consists of pyramidal/truncated pyramidal, cone shaped/truncated cone shaped objects made of solid clay, which are drilled at their pointed ends. They are not formally similar to “real” andirons and although it is not excluded that they were even used to support logs, their shape and training make this unlikely. In terms of their shape, they are more likely to be classified as different weights (fishing net weights, loom weights or roof weights). It is very likely that they were originally made for such purposes, but their secondary use is not excluded as well. If only a few of them are found – especially near former ovens, fireplaces – then it is not impossible that they have been used in the form of topka, known from the research of Serbian colleagues, that is, a support or a pad for baking dishes/pans. All in all, it would be worth considering using the term andiron only for “real” andirons in ethnographic collections, and for the other two groups of objects, they should be associated with names that are closer to their true function.
