Abstract
A remarkable vessel was found by the archaeologistst in an early modern - modern pit in the summer of 2015, during an archaeological excavation at site Kecskemét–Nagykőrösi Street No. 7–9. This fragmentary vessel or jug is covered with white glaze and decorated with blue, green and yellow or brown ornaments. On the front side of the vessel a set of cooper tools are depicted. According to the tools and the ethnographic data, it is justified to suppose that this jug was the property of the coopers’ guild. There are no data about guilds in Kecskemét from before the period of the Ottoman conquest. In the 16th and 17th centuries, only six guilds were established by issuing their regulations: that of the goldsmiths, the furriers, the tailors, the soap makers, the blacksmiths and the bootmakers. The activity of coopers in Kecskemét is testified by only a few evidences, some sparse data or documents. Though they had probably been working in the city continuously since the 16th century, they established their guild only in the 18th century (probably in 1792). Their guild certainly existed by the beginning of the 19th century, even the name one of the leading master is known. However, no regulation, no list of the members, and no artifacts (seal, flag, guild chest, guild pottery) have survived. This makes the discovery of the guild jug unearthed at the Kecskemét–Nagykőrösi Street No. 7–9 especially significant: finally an object can be connected to the coopers in Kecskemét.
