Actualmente, existen en Puerto Rico investigaciones sobre la identidad y las ideologías lingüísticas (e.g., Clachar, 2007; Domínguez-Rosado, 2015; Mazak, 2012; Pérez Casas, 2008, 2016) pero, muy pocas dirigidas a aspectos del paisaje lingüístico, o linguistic landscape, en adelante LL por sus siglas en inglés. Así, esta investigación contribuirá al estudio sincrónico de uso de las lenguas en la publicidad comercial o gubernamental, en el espacio público asociado con la identidad puertorriqueña. En el estudio se determinará si el uso de las lenguas en billboards de Carolina, Guaynabo y San Juan responde a la oficialización de las lenguas (español e inglés) en Puerto Rico, o si corresponde con la identidad lingüística de determinados grupos poblacionales. Además, se describirá el LL y los rasgos distintivos de la lengua o las lenguas usados en los billboards. Even though linguistic identities and social ideologies in Puerto Rico have been the topics of research in the past (e.g., Clachar, 2007; Domínguez-Rosado, 2015; Mazak, 2012; Pérez Casas, 2008, 2016), few of these studies have deal with the linguistic landscape (from now on LL). In the study of LL in Puerto Rico, one question that arises is whether the language variety used is a group identifier within the community. From a synchronic approach, one or more linguistic varieties will be identified in the advertising discourse that frames billboards in Puerto Rico, within the municipalities of Carolina, Guaynabo and San Juan. Through the study of the LL, Language Law becomes another matter to question. Spanish and English are official languages in Puerto Rico, and this research contributes to the identification of language(s) used, its features and potential associations to the speech community.
