Abstract
The post-World War II period and 40 years in the Soviet sphere of interest captured Hungary from a centuries-old system of economic cooperation in Central Europe. This system was operated primarily between Hungarian agriculture and the region of Western Europe, mainly German territories, with industrial traditions. Previously established trade relations between Western and Central and Eastern European countries were reduced to a minimum in the 1950s, so the technology gap became gradual. The re-established co-operation from the early 1970s was mainly limited to imports of shortages and starting from an extremely low volume. Relations between Hungary and Germany became dominant again following the German reunification and the Central and Eastern European regime changes. Already at the beginning of the 1990s, significant capital investment by Germany regulated by bilateral agreements, began. In parallel with this process, trade cooperation between the two countries continued to expand. The aim of the study is to show how Germany has become the most important economic partner of Hungary over the last 30 years. It explains that how became Hungary an integral part of the system of Central European economic cooperation. The study mainly examines the level of German working capital investments in Hungary and German – Hungarian foreign trade relationships.
