Over the last twenty years the use of internet, and social media has become central in our daily lives. It has opened up many new ways for us to express ourselves, to build new relationships and to spend our free time – but the problematic use of the Internet has also become common among people: more and more areas of our lives are affected by the online world – which is especially true for teenagers and young adults. Independence from the family plays an important role at this stage of life, so the process may be influenced by the characteristics of the family system. The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between problematic internet use and virtual self-presentation in regards to the degree of selfdifferentiation. The research is in the data collection phase at the moment, but we are expecting to see a relationship between the level of self-differentiation and internet usage patterns. By combining research findings with other relevant research results, we can obtain a more nuanced picture of the psychological and family characteristics of internet use. As a long-term goal, we can even talk about increasing the number of prevention tools. These methods would focus on family functioning in reducing the degree of problematic internet use and could help in acquiring more effective ways to cope with difficulties in life.
