Abstract

On 15 December 1998, the European Council adopted a Resolution on a Forestry Strategy for the European Union. The Forestry Strategy provides a framework for forest-related actions in the EU, considering the existing EU legislation concerning the forest sector and the commitments made by the European Union and its Member States in all relevant international processes, in particular the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 and its follow-up, as well as the Ministerial Conferences on the Protection of Forests in Europe. The Strategy emphasises the importance of the multifunctional role of forests and sustainable forest management. The enforcement of the Forestry Strategy became the following cardinal fields: forest protection, rural development, protection against the illegal loggings, development of the forest-based and related industries. On 20. September 2013, the Commission adopted a communication about the new EU Forest Strategy for forests and the forest-based sector. The central element of the strategy is same: multifunctional role of forests and sustainable forest management. According to the previous strategy the new is more detailed. EU Forest Strategy defines eight priorities in three group (Sustainable forest management contributes to major societal objectives; Improving the knowledge base; Fostering coordination and communication) and it determinds the strategic orientations of the priorities. I think the common actions can realise a common forestry policy in the future. Allude to this the following conclusion of the EU Forest Strategy: „The EU needs a policy framework that coordinates and ensures coherence of forest-related policies and allows synergies with other sectors that influence forest management.”
