Hryhory Kvitka-Osnovyanenko (1778-1843), is an Ukrainian writer and playwright, who is often referred to as the father of the Ukrainian prose, wrote a number of satiric dramas in Russian language in the second decade of XIX century. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko’s oeuvre is characterised by manyfold and exciting usage of speaking names. The article is devoted to the literary onomastics of two dramas, the Turkish shawl, or so it is and Shelmenko-volost clerk.
