The county carried the name Torontál — for seven centuries. It is in use from the first written trails on the settlement (begining of the XIV. century) until 1920, when Torontál county became the part of Jugoslavia and Romania. Until the Turks invasion the area of historian Torontal county was an original Hungarian county. Torontál was during in the XVI—XVII. centuries more Serbs from the south came away, which were many ortodox priests. The Turks left Torontáli n 1718. As a crown province, Banat (Torontál, Temes and Krassó-Szörény counties) belonged directly to the Vienna court. The first period of organized colonization of Banat began int he autumn of 1717 and ended in 1740: It is known as the Caroline Colonization after the emperor Charles VI. In this period (1717-1740) German colonists and some „non-German" colonists (Serbs, Romanians, Bulgarians, Italians, Spaniards & Francemen) came to Torontál county. The second period of organized colonization occured between 1744-1772 and is known as the Teresian Colonization, after the Queen Maria Theresia. In the period 1744-1768, twice a year, the „undesirables" (vagrants, poachers, smugglers, prostitutes, peasants in conflict with their landlords etc) were colonized in Banat („Temesvarer Wasserschub system"). The third period of organized colonization occured between 1782-1787 and is known as the Josephine Colonization, after the King Joseph II. The XIX. century colonization: starting with the iddle of XIX. century, Germans, Czech and Slowaks are settled here. hi 1910 Torontál county became a multicultural place of Hungary.
