Abstract
The role of social media in political activism has got considerable recognition in the past years; however, the role of images that are spread on these sites still understudied. There is a possibility that the visual contents can create and strengthen collective activism, this preliminary study provides a symbolic viewpoint on Arab Spring through investigating the conversion of three young victim’s death into a motif of the movement that leads a revolution. Activists were driven by a shocking photographs of Khaled Saeed, Mohamed Bouazizi and Hamza Ali Al-Khateeb taken by their families who also shared these visual motivations through the social networks. These photos had a vigorous emotional impact; however the metamorphoses of all three from the local martyrdoom to a country or worldwide symbol of the movement cannot be justified by these photos mere availability on the web. Their conversion demanded mediation by others who generalized the meaning of these photos and attached them to the existing grievances. Therefore, this short study offers an introduction how these visual contents worked inside the society. The introductory part of this paper summarizes the recent research, then the second part introduces the possibilities of the collective actions, then the last part links this transformation to the activism.
