The essay discusses the relationship of the Holy See and Hungary in the early 1000s on the basis of the St. Peter patrocinium of the bishopric of Pécs founded in I009. Presumably at the initiative of St. Stephen, in 1009 papal legate Azo visited Hungary, participating in the foundation of the dioceses of Pécs, Kalocsa and Eger. The second bishop of Rome, ranking immediately after the pope, Azo's person proves that the Holy See had representation in Hungary of an extremely high level. The patrocinium of the bishoprics founded in I009 followed the patron saints of the papal basilica of Rome (Pécs — St. Peter, Kalocsa — St. Paul, Eger — St. John). The reason that Pécs received Peter as one of the Roman patrociniums was that some years before that Bruno of Querfurt had come to proselytise in the area on behalf of St. Peter. We are to perceive a conscious imitation of Rome in the selection of these patron saints. All this, at the same time, shows that at this time, a very close relationship developed between Hungary and the Holy See.
