Absztrakt (kivonat)
The so called „Russian line” played a signifficant role from 1710 till 1711 in Rákóczi’s War of Independence (1703-1711). This „Russian line” was established by the Treaty of Warsaw (варшавский договор), concluded by Tsar Peter I (regarding the Rzeczpospolita) with Prince Francis II Rákóczi on September 4/15, 1707 (according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars, respectively). The principal advocate for these Russian connections was General Miklós Bercsényi. Following the Battle of Trencsén (August 3, 1708), the War for Independence began to decline militarily and became increasingly isolated internationally. In the meantime, during the „Great Northern War” (1700–1721), Peter I’s Europe-wide renowned victory at Poltava (June 27/July 8, 1709) marked a turning point. Capitalizing on this event, Bercsényi, on behalf of the prince, engaged in extensive diplomatic activities in 1710–1711 with the tsar’s „traveling chancellery” („походная канцелярия”), to secure the support of Peter I. Primarily seeking military aid, while also hoping for diplomatic backing. Bercsényi conducted negotiations in Poland with the tsar’s envoy there and maintained contacts with key figures in the tsarist government, high-ranking Russian officers, Polish nobles, and others. His negotiations also aimed to facilitate Russian-French rapprochement. The assessment of Bercsényi’s diplomatic activities is not unanimous in either Hungarian or Russian historiography. This study discusses the relevant parts of signifficant publications on the topic, in chronological order, quoting extensively from authors starting from the 19th to the 21st centuries. How did the authors of these publications, with their varying perspectives evaluate Bercsényi’s efforts? In what ways and to what extent did their assessments differ? What new perspectives did they introduce, either pro or contra? These are the questions this study seeks to answer.
