Absztrakt (kivonat)

The topic of British national sentiment has been approached from various perspectives, receiving much scholarly attention over the past decades. The primary aim of this paper is to investigate the connection between visual arts and national identity-formation in mid-to-late eighteenth-century Britain, focusing on concepts of nationhood promoted by painters working at the heart of the English art world. Drawing on the works of William Hogarth, Francis Hayman, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, John Singleton Copley, and Benjamin West, I analyse how definitions of ‘Englishness’ changed with the rise of British visual arts and the market for cultural goods. In my analysis of twelve British paintings produced in the second half of the century, I aspire to uncover how the discourse of patriotism served to promote new images of the nation, encouraging the increased consumption of local artistic products. Combining the writings of art historians, sociologists, and economic theorists with the treatises of eighteenth-century painters in defence of their profession, I examine the development of the British artistic world in its entire complexity. In forming a deeper understanding of the relationship between contemporary identity formation and active engagement in cultural practices, I observe the role assigned to visual arts in shaping Englishmen into polite and cultured individuals. The key notions observed in this paper include the struggles of native artists against imported commodities, the establishment of the country’s first official art institution, the hierarchy of genres of painting, and painters’ efforts to manipulate consumer behaviour using a specific national rhetoric. This thesis hopes to provide a comprehensive view of what it meant to be ‘English’ in the Age of Enlightenment through an artistic lens, looking at national values in the context of Britain’s warfare with France, the rise of the public, and the increased number of bourgeois consumers of art.
