Postcolonial literature has yielded a substantial body of literary rewritings accompanied by pertinent criticism. Primarily, these rewritings revisit the productions of the colonial literary era from a novel standpoint: the postcolonial perspective of the oppressed or colonial Other, who was previously voiceless in colonial texts. My thesis is dedicated to a detailed examination of the literary rewriting process, and I will specifically deal with postcolonial rewriting in John Maxwell Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians (1980) which serves as a responsive work to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899). The examination unfolds through: first, a theoretical framework of major concepts of postcolonialism such as Orientalism, postcolonial rewriting, hybridity and second by eliciting the differences between both versions of literature: colonial works of literature and postcolonial ones. The second chapter is centered on two of J. M. Coetzee's rewritings, namely Foe (1986) as a rewriting of Robinson Crusoe (1719) and In the Heart of the Country (1977) as a rewriting of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899). Finally, the third chapter of the thesis is dedicated to an in-depth examination of “Waiting for the Barbarians” as a postcolonial rewriting of “Heart of Darkness.” This analysis involves a thorough exploration of both the similarities and differences between the two works. Furthermore, the chapter delves into the themes of otherness and linguistic hybridity within the context of the studied literature. In conclusion, the thesis posits that the utilization of hybrid characters, linguistic hybridity, and adopting alternative perspectives serves as a means for postcolonial subjects to engage in a critical discourse, effectively writing back and challenging colonial modes of representation.
