Absztrakt (kivonat)

Dystopia is a well-known term, but its definition is a bit more complicated. Although it is frequently considered to be the opposite of utopia, this paper argues that it is not just a negative version of it. The two concepts possess deep generic connections and share some of their features, namely that they react to the same phenomena occurring in the times and societies of their creation and that both of them try to warn their audiences. Although their roots and objectives are the same, they achieve their goals from two different perspectives. Utopias criticize their own times through emphasizing a perfect outcome that may be achieved if humans are willing to work for it. Dystopias, however, stress the fears of a given society and present a repulsive future with the aim of deterring the audience from their possible accomplishment. I also want to argue that utopias are not absolutely perfect and they consist of certain amount of ambivalence, and that this is the main reason why dystopias can use them as starting points. Although later dystopian stories are also going to be referred to, I chose H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine as the primary illustration for my ideas. The reason for this is that this narrative thoroughly presents the generic relations between utopias and dystopias and displays the primary function of utopias and dystopias: namely to motivate their audiences to work for improvement.
