Absztrakt (kivonat)
This paper discusses the music, lyrics, artwork, and cultural characteristics of grindcore, arguing that it is an individual music genre rather than a lesser subset of other genres. Grindcore is a highly subversive form of music, carrying unique characteristics which make it a scene defined by the DIY ethos and reflexive anti-reflexivity. The aesthetic components which characterize the visual and aural approach of grindcore blend together the most extreme forms of metal and punk, but also recall the Dadaist movement of the early 20th century, all while adding numerous innovative elements. By examining its aesthetics represented in music, artwork, lyrics, and cultural traits, it can be established that grindcore is a genre of its own, defined by a cultural scene embodying subversive attitudes, reflexivity, and anti-mainstream mindsets. This paper proposes to view the grindcore community as a global scene rather than a ‘subculture,’ as it is not bound by age, class, gender, or geographic location, and allows interaction with other cultural spheres. To prove this, the initial chapter of the discussion explains the main traits of grindcore music and provides a brief history of the genre. A detailed analysis of lyrics and subgenres is also provided, taking a range of different approaches into account. The second chapter explores the artwork of grindcore albums, comparing their prevalent themes and aesthetic characteristics with Dadaist works of art and the mindset represented by these works. The third chapter inspects the cultural aspects of the grindcore scene by investigating the roots of its shared ethos, forms of reflexivity, and internal debates.
