La tarea principal del USS Triton era circunnavegar el Globo –siguiendo el antiguo viaje alrededor de la Tierra de la expedición de Magallanes (1519-1522)–, pero siempre completamente bajo el agua y a profundidad de periscopio. El USS Triton recorrió 67 292 km en 84 días y 19 horas y nunca salió a la superficie. El submarino nuclear cruzó el Ecuador cuatro veces, al igual que el barco Victoria de Magallanes. La primera circunnavegación submarina del Globo tuvo lugar en un momento de la Guerra Fría en que había una gran rivalidad de tecnología militar y nuclear soviético-estadounidense. La Operación Magallanes estuvo motivada por varias razones. Una era de carácter diplomático: el presidente estadounidense Eisenhower quería lograr un gran y espectacular éxito diplomático contra la Unión Soviética antes de las cuatro cumbres previstas en París en mayo de 1960. Los elementos estratégico-militares de la Operación Sandblast incluyeron la clara demostración de que los submarinos estadounidenses de propulsión nuclear podían aparecer en cualquier lugar de los océanos del Mundo durante mucho tiempo mientras permanecían sumergidos. El USS Triton se dirigió a las costas españolas ya que desde allí había partido el viaje de Magallanes. Un crucero del US Navy tomó un regalo especial del submarino nuclear después de completar la circunnavegación y lo entregó a las autoridades españolas, conmemorando así el viaje de Magallanes-Elcano de 1519-1522. The main task of the USS Triton –following the former journey around the Earth (1519-1522) of the Magellan expedition– was to circumnavigate the Earth, but all the way under water and at periscope depth. The USS Triton traveled 67,292 km in 84 days and 19 hours and never once surfaced. The nuclear submarine crossed the Equator four times, as did Magellan’s ship Victoria at the time. The First Submarine Circumnavigation of the World took place at a time when there was a great Soviet-American nuclear and military technology competition. Operation Sandblast was motivated by several motives. One was of a diplomatic nature: American President Eisenhower wanted to achieve a great and spectacular diplomatic success against the Soviet Union before the four summit meeting planned for Paris in May 1960. The militarystrategic elements of Operation Sandblast included the clear demonstration that nuclear-powered American submarines could appear anywhere in the world’s oceans for a very long time all the while remaining submerged. The USS Triton headed for the Spanish coast, as Magellan’s journey had also started from here. An American cruiser took a special coin from the nuclear submarine after completing the trip around the world and handed it over to the Spanish authorities, thus commemorating Magellan’s voyage of 1519-1522, which was repeated in 1960 by the USS Triton.
