Our study draws attention to the territorial problems affecting football talent development in Hungary. We aim to compare the counties of Hungary (NUTS level III) using specific parameters of men’s football. We focus on the population size, the potential of the elite training centres defined by the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ), and the potential of professional clubs. We examine productivity scores of the MLSZ and national team representation as output indicators. Our data is derived from the publicly available database of MLSZ and the Central Statistical Office (KSH). According to our results, training potential is related to geographical location. The central, northeastern, and northwestern parts of the country are well-resourced in terms of priority training centres (i.e. talent centres and academies), while the rest of the country seems to be lagging. The presence of professional clubs that ensure the retention and further development of talents is a general characteristic of more populous counties. However, we know that talents do not necessarily transition to senior football in their training clubs. These inequalities encourage migration. Productivity indicators show a strong correlation with the potential of elite training centres and professional clubs. In this respect, the Transdanubian counties are mostly stronger than those east of the Danube. Similar results were also obtained in terms of the number and proportion of national team players in the counties. From all this, we concluded that differences in training potential generate inequality in talent management, which greatly influences players’ opportunities for development.
