The AP (advanced placement) exam is the most widely accepted entrance exam, coordinated and developed by the College Board. This paper briefly describes the tasks and taxonomy of requirements for the AP History exam. The presentation and analysis of the tasks of the AP exam system can help to reveal the methodologically widespread and proven methods of measuring the complex components of historical knowledge (e.g., historical thinking), which may also be relevant for the development of the AP history exam in Hungary. The different standardized types of tasks (multiple-choice, short-answer, source-based, essay) of the AP History exam, both closed-ended and open-ended, are suitable for measuring high-level thinking around key historical competences (e.g. understanding differences between different historical interpretations). The tasks require analysis of complex historical problems, historical reasoning, understanding of different narrative structures. The relevance of the AP requirements lies in their emphasis on soft skills (e.g. problem solving, critical thinking) beyond content, which play a key role in promoting lifelong learning.
