Abstract

Lutherans in Hungary were divided between four languages (Slovak, German, Hungarian, and Wendish) in the 19th century. The formation of the Hungarian and Slovak national movements lead to various internal conflicts within the Lutheran Church. While these conflicts are often subjects of Hungarian and international (Slovak, Austrian, and German) studies, we have relatively little, approximate data about the ethnic makeup of the Lutheran community in the middle of the 19th century. We aimed to refine this data using the linguistic information of the Lutheran schematism of 1848, and to present the linguistic makeup of the 19th century Lutheran community in Hungary. In our analysis we examined data on both national and diocesan level.
