The struggles of a pro-Patent minister in Zólyom county. The Protestant Patent published by Franz Joseph I. in 1859 was after short deliberation refused by the whole of the Reformed Church, as well as the majority of the Lutheran Church. Due to open resistance Franz Joseph revoked the Patent, but he allowed churches that accepted it by their own accord to abide by its rulings. This study examines the history of one of these pro-Patent congregations from the publication of the Patent, through its revocation, until the formation of the pro-Patent church. By studying the conflicts surrounding Sámuel Rutkay, the minister of Felsőmicsinye, we can learn more about questions like Slovak-Hungarian relations, the daily lives of pro-Patent ministers, and the arguments for abiding by the Patent, which can often be quite subjective in nature.
