In the middle of the 19th century, the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Hungary experienced one of the greatest crises in its history. It had been struggling for a long time because of the persecutions of Protestants and attempts to liquidate it, but it was wracked by its own problems and internal conflicts as well. The situation in the Hungarian Protestant Church became unbearable at the end of the 1850s after the fall of Neoabsolutism. On September 1, 1859, monarch Franz Joseph I (1848-1916) issued an imperial patent, also known as the Protestant Patent, which triggered the awakening Slovak national movement, and for several years kept its leaders intensively engaged in the struggle to enforce it. The aim of present study is to summarize the knowledge from previous publications and articles, and to utilize contemporary sources and periodicals to provide information that demonstrates the first steps of Slovak Lutherans after the adoption of the patent and emphasizes the importance of the patent movement in Slovak national life in the 1860s.
