The paper presents the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Sándor Petőfi, based on contemporary newspapers, which provides an opportunity to illustrate the political use of the ”martyred” poet: his cult was modeled on religious cults, which in post-Trianon Hungary gave hope for the apotheosis of the nation as a sacred community, and was suitable for spreading the propaganda of irredentism, which also used religious symbols, in local communities. The celebrations abroad were intended to confirm Petőfi’s importance in world literature, the ”Hungarian genius” and the cultural supremacy of the Hungarian people in the Carpathian Basin; but the commemorative year also provided a way of promoting the popular-national conception of literature. The paper then examines the artistic works (symphony, folk play, drama and film) made about Petőfi in 1923 as products of high and popular culture, and then presents the centenary editions of his works, which also provides an opportunity to illustrate the sometimes conflicting state funding and market operation and control of culture.
