The beginning of the 14th century marked a new era in the history of the Kingdom of Hungary, and also in that of the Church: while the grandson of Charles II of Anjou was fighting for the Hungarian throne, the popes were settling in Avignon. This period of the papacy was characterised by the centralisation of the Holy See’s power, with the creation of pontifical taxation and a rigorous administration. These changes underlined the importance of the collation and taxation of benefices, particularly of the consistorial benefices. This paper examines whether the papal government in the 14th century succeeded in achieving its goals in the case of the Kingdom of Hungary through the payment of the taxes for consistorial benefices (servitia). The few problematic cases described by the sources provide information on the reasons for the failure to fulfil the payments and on the sanctions imposed by the Avignon Curia.
