The Great Eastern Crisis (1875-1878), and the concluding Congress of Berlin fundamentally changed the balance of power at the end of the 19th century. Prior the negotiations, the decision-makers were assisted by several diplomats and political agents as well as informants. Since 2005, it is known that Ármin Vámbéry (1832-1913) was in the British service. From the 1860s onwards, Vámbéry's accounts of his travels were read with great enthusiasm by the British public in various newspapers. However, rather than a detailed account of Vámbéry's journalistic activities, this study focuses on his work as an informant, as he also had connections to the British Foreign Office as early as the 1870s. The literature dates his role with the British and his letters specifically to 1889. However, Vámbéry had been supplying information to the staff of the British consulate in Budapest long before that, during the Great Eastern Crisis.
