No comprehensive analysis of the clergymen participating in independence conspiracies following the War of Independence of 1848-49 had been made until now. Present study summarizes these careers using archival sources from Hungary and Vienna. Most of these clergymen were repeat “offenders”, meaning that they were also active during the events of the War of Independence. Regardless of the severity of the charges, whether they played a leading role, or only knew about the plans and were hiding Kossuth dollars, the majority of them were sentenced. While only Kilit Gasparich was actually executed, many of them fell victim to the infectious diseases spreading in the prisons of Vienna. and Libor Kosztka, the prior of the Minorites in Arad committed suicide in his cell in Pest. These court-martial proceedings prove that similarly to members of secular society, some of the clergy was also ready to participate in the fight for independence.
