On 24 February 2022, at 6:00 Moscow time, V. V. Putin, President of the Russian Federation, addressed the citizens of his country in an extraordinary televised speech. In a key paragraph of the speech, he declared, what he called, a „special military operation”. While the Russian state and the state-controlled media talk about a „special military operation” and the necessary protection of the Russian-speaking population, the Western and all secular press talk about an open attack on Ukraine, a war, the most severe crisis, and humanitarian catastrophe of the 21st century. Te hypothesis is that the issue of threat is prominent in the presidential speech and those concrete threats can be identifed. I seek to answer the question: what does threat mean to President Putin - as opposed to security? And what does he think threatens Russia? Are there perhaps transitions, or degrees, between the diferent threats? As a prelude to the Study, I examined the identity of Russia in President Putin’s original speech in Russian, using ATLAS.ti qualitative data analysis sofware. I found 41 frst person plural possessive pronouns, all of which were characterised by security and threat. Te Study deals with 32 results from the threat group of frst person plural possessive pronouns. Te Paper also touches on the issues of language, political language and identity in its content analysis. In addition, it explains the emergence of in-group, out-group groups, the characteristics of political discourse or the creation of the image of the enemy.
