At the end of the 18th century, the difficulties of transport due to the marshes created new needs in Bácska, with the construction of new waterways, which were of great transit importance for the transport of goods and passengers. One of the most striking examples of this was the construction of the Ferenc Canal, which considerably shortened the route of the Danube shipping. The works, designed and supervised by József Kiss and Gábor Kiss, began in 1793 between Bácsföldvár and Monostorszeg and were opened to traffic in 1802. In just a few years its economic usefulness and profitability were considerable, and the waterway traffic brought a noticeable boom to the settlements along the canal. In the first twenty-five years of its operation, it earned no less than 20 million forints. This study describes the Ferenc Canal by presenting two rare accounts of the canal, based on the impressions of Count Domokos Teleki (1773- 1798), who visited the canal in 1796 and published in 1796, and Antal Mindszenthy (circa 1786-1859), who published a paper in 1831 documenting the canal’s successful operation.
