Baja became a royal chamber market-town in 1696, and from 1727 its landowners became the Czobor and then the Grassalkovich family. The town was freed from its landlords in 1858, and in 1863 it also bought the Baja Domain. In 1866 and repeatedly in 1870, it applied for status of a free royal town. In 1873, it gained the status of a municipal city. This was celebrated at the inauguration of the Chief Lieutenant, Máté Lénárd. Most of the city’s residents took part in the celebrations held on June 21-22, 1873. The Chief Lieutenant and his entourage, who arrived by steamboat on June 21, were awaited with triumphal gates decorated with flags. He was hosted by Gábor Latinovics at the Roman Catholic parish, who also participated in the preparation of the ceremony. The following day, after the celebratory mass, the official inauguration ceremony was held at the town hall, where the 11th article of the 1873 law was read out. After that, the city’s leaders participated in lunch at the city’s Bárány inn at a table laid for 200 persons. Later, with the urban elite, they partied in the shooting club garden, with more than 700 distinguished citizens. In the afternoon, oxen were roasted and barrels of wine were tapped on the market square for the lower classes. Six musicians played the tambourines at the party. The details of the organization of the city celebration have been preserved in the city archives, e.g. names of members of the organizing committee or the itemized budgeted costs of the folk festival. According to the historia domus of the Franciscans, these were the most famous and memorable days in the history of the city.
