In my essay I will show how the Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the former Attila Jozsef University of Szeged was built up. It may be worthwhile to review who and what was taught in this educational unit to the students of the time. It is well known that the one-party communist dictatorship that gradually developed after 1945 permeated all aspects of life. Accordingly, culture, science and education could not escape its fate. Between 1950 and 1989, at Hungarian colleges and universities, as a general rule, philosophy was a compulsory subject in the first year, political economy in the second, and scientific socialism in the third. Students were required to take a colloquium in these subjects and to pass an examination. My thesis is that ideological education has not lived up to expectations, as it has not been possible to fully instil a sense of belonging to this group of subjects. They were seen as a compulsory subject. In many young people of the rebellious era, moreover, they aroused a certain resentment because they evoked a mere, stripped-down image of power. My research question is: what were the means by which the professors tried to make themselves popular (or just accepted)? Was there a certain „Szeged specificity” in ideological education? To sum up, it can be said that the people of the time witnessed a long-lasting pedagogical reform that ended up in a dead end.
