The study examines the partisan reprisals against the local Hungarian population in Zenta during World War II in 1944 and the mechanisms of their subsequent justification through the documents of local and district war crimes investigation committees. The article compares the lists compiled by these committees, revealing differences in the investigations and the conclusions that can be drawn from them. The analysis of the documents suggests that records produced by the partisan authorities often served post hoc self-justification, raising serious questions about their objectivity and credibility. The study emphasizes the importance of source criticism, which must not allow for simplistic, collective responsibility.
