The readers of Subotica first came across printed photographs among the local press publications in the issues of Vasárnap (1891–1892) and Achilles (1892), whereas the first photo reports appeared in the columns of Bácsország (1904–1906), which advertised itself as a photo magazine. At the beginning of the 20th century photographs became a new means of information flow and reporting, while remaining independent illustrations with artistic value. The research undertakes to explore the characteristics of contemporary photo use by cataloguing the images published in the Bácsország magazine, in addition to providing an insight into the initial steps of the development of press photography in the Bácska region. The elements of the collection are analyzed based on aspects such as the place and role of photography in the printed press, the origin and method of the acquisition of the photos, their subject matter, as well as the specifics of production and communication.
