The author of the study seeks to answer what the Hungarian government knew and did not know in real-time, between 1944 and 1946, about the partisan reprisals against the Hungarian population in the southern regions. What did these pieces of information contain? How, through whom, and via what channels did they reach government bodies and the general public? What happened to the incoming information within the labyrinth of bureaucratic administration? Did Budapest utilize this information, and ultimately, why did the authorities attempt to downplay and later forget these horrific massacres? At the end of the study, the author also raises the question of why, during the years of the dramatic deterioration of Hungarian-Yugoslav relations, Budapest did not use the reprisals against Hungarians as a political card against the Tito regime. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore the purpose behind the decades-long silence and denial in both Yugoslavia and Hungary.
