A recurring question in Hungarian political life is why smaller political parties are unable to break through the so-called "glass ceiling" and become a viable governing force in the long run. Although there have been instances where a small party rapidly grew into a significant political player, such cases remain rare. Notable examples on the Hungarian political landscape include the strengthening of Fidesz between 1994 and 1998, the rise of Jobbik from 2006 to 2018, and the emergence of the TISZA Party after 2022. The significant growth of these three parties resulted from different political circumstances and strategies. In the mid-1990s, Fidesz transformed from a niche party appealing to young people into a dominant force covering the entire society, capitalizing on growing dissatisfaction with the MSZP-SZDSZ government. After 2006, Jobbik filled a political vacuum by representing radical right-wing views, later attempting to broaden its voter base through a shift towards a more mainstream image. The most recent example, the TISZA Party, surpassed 25% support in the 2024 European Parliament elections, becoming the first new party to break out of the framework established by previous examples. This study aims to explore the political processes, strategies, and factors that led to the strengthening of these parties and to examine which elements might still be relevant in today’s political environment. It pays particular attention to the political context that triggered their growth, the recognition and exploitation of political vacuums, and the role of charismatic leaders. Furthermore, it highlights how the rise of Jobbik and the TISZA Party aligns with broader European trends, while Fidesz’s case is considered unique not only in Hungary but also in the European political arena.
