In my paper I will display you the story of the foundation and operation of an important trading company, the Hungarian-Croat Maritime Steamship Ltd. between 1893 and 1913. This company was the one which linked Fiume (and so Hungary) with the Adriatic Sea’s and the western Greek shores’ ports. In my research I analyse those codified support contracts (1891–1914) between the company and the Hungarian government, in which they specified to which piers and the number of routes the company has to be in contact with. In accordance with the above, on the grounds of the available statistical data I analyse the company’s shipping trade, passenger traffic and goods trade in Fiume and I compare these date with the steamshipping trade I calculated for the twenty-three years from the foundation of the company until World War I. My expactations are from my research that it helps to enlight an important feature of Hungarian external trade.
