The campaign of the Monarchy’s army against Serbia in 1914 ended with a serious defeat. In addition to the dead and the wounded, 85,000 Austro–Hungarian soldiers were taken to Serbian detention. Due to the harsh circumstances of the detention and the rampant typhoid epidemic, only 35,000 prisoners of war survived the autumn of 1915. The Serbian army retreating to the south from the attack of the Central Powers troops carried their prisoners of war. Because of the cold and the starvation, many died in the Albanian mountains. In Valona, the prisoners of war were placed under Italian authority and were transported to Asinara Island. Choleratook its victims during the cruise and on the island. In February 1916, Italians registered 16743 prisoners, 67.8% of whom were from the Kingdom of Hungary. The survivors were later transported to France, and could only return home after the end of the war. The golgotha and personal tragedy of the prisoners of war from Bácska can be reconstructed well in the documents of death declaring procedures carried out in the case of 33 people at the Archiepiscopal Holy See of Kalocsa.
