The old name of the Hungarians Sabartoi Asphaloi in De Administrando Imperio chapter 38. and the story of the Sabartoi-Kangar war is an authentic hungarian tradition kept by the source. The name Sabartoi can be identified with the name Sabir, people living on the european steppe from the 6th century, later becoming part of the Khazar Khaganate. This tradition became hungarian tradition by the join of the Kabars, of khazarian origin, who fled from Khazaria after a defeated rebellion against the Khagan. In this paper I dealt with the argumentation of authors who deny the connection between the name Sabartoi and Sabir or even the authenticity of the hungarian tradition Sabartoi Asphaloi. I could show the existence of many names from khazar and bulgarian enviroment connected to Sabirs in different forms pointing to them. I could show that the Sabirs were at least part of, if not the same of the Khazars. I also dealt with the question of the origin of Kabars, proving that there is no satisfactory theory on their origin, but their khazar past gives us the key to understand how the hungarians could have a sabir tradition.
