Two early methods of cartographical representation of the marine abysses, notably isobathic method and representation with discrete elevation figures, are still considered as modern in the recent sense of the word. The origins of the isobathic method date back to the end of the 16th century. The method that uses discrete elevation figures is even older, as this serves as base for isobathic representation. From a modern point of view, it seems incomprehensible, why did scientists of a marine research institute choose physiographic method of submarine relief representation instead of the much more exact isobathic method in the mid-20th century. The author of the actual paper investigates the causes, discussing the unusual achievement of this regress. He compares the method with the Raisz method developed earlier for representation of terrestrial areas, and involves himself in an imaginary polemic with Erwin Raisz.
