After a brief summary of comic paper literature of the 19th century and the presentation of the elements of identity I focus on the connections between self image and pictures formed on other national groups. This connection can be characterised first of all with the complementary nature of its components. It becomes apparent, that characteristic elements of every day thinking patterns are manifested in the stereotypes of comic papers and they refer to essential units of popular culture. In my research, I define the elements of national identity by using the results of the empiric researches of György Csepeli as a starting point: stereotypes of visibility, name, religion, national symbols, language and tematisations (natural, psychological, economical, social and historical). I demonstrate the stereotypes of visibility (dressing), national symbols, language and psychological tematisations (typical putatived features, drinking and eating habits, jobs) concerning different national groups living in Hungary. It can be established that the stereotypes pointed out in the comic papers played an important role in the preservation of Hungarian national identity in the beginning of the 1860s and they promoted its strengthening from the end of the 1860’s onwards.
