When the European Union – with its past of fifty years – entered the 21st century, found itself within new international circumstances and brand new challenges. Together with the weakening hegemony of the United States of America and the re-occurring battle in between great powers there opened a new way for a possible unified European presence – not only in the economical, but political and cultural-symbolical sense of the word. This historical opportunity has been developing into an earnest requirement in the “old continent”, and this requirement turned to be one of the fundamental factors of the European constitutional procedure. The question of unity has always been including several aspects and suggestions in order to solve the problem. There have been certain debates concerning the self-defining symbolical endeavours to create a cultural “unity” of Europe. One of the most outstanding of these was dealing with the representation of Christian traditions and the redefinition of the role of the church. Establishing a monolithic policy proved to be even more problematic than usual in the member states. My study tries answer the question weather the results of the debates (old and new alike) in connection with the European Constitution can be the interpretations of the new Europe, or the current phenomena is no more than the product of the historical moment, providing new dimensions to the church and religion only to find its role in the (post)modern society.
